The Masters: 2016 Bouldering Citizens' National Championship

Looks like a small turnout this year 2016 Bouldering Citizens' National Championship Masters division; it will be bigger next year right guys??? We have a full year to train, so get climbing!!! It was held on January 30th at Boulders Madison, WI. Robyn Erbesfield-Raboutou of Boulder, Colorado had a solid comp, taking first in the women's masters with 20,400 points. Doug Aburano out of Chicago, Illinois also had a stellar comp taking first in the male masters category with 22,500 points. I posted the full results below.

I was not able to attend this year and could not find any photos of the event. If anyone has photos they would like to share, that would be awesome!

*I started my training 4 weeks ago and it seems that I am spending more time on preventive maintenance that I am actually climbing, but I know it will pay off in the end. I can't climb if I am injured.

Wow . . . Climbing! I started climbing in 1989 and I was hooked on the first climb at Rattlesnake Point in Toronto, Canada. My second trip out to the Gunks hooked me even more; that weekend I actually dropped $150 on a harness, belaying device, and shoes and I was poor – I ate ramen for months. Anyways tying my own harness out of webbing was not at all comfortable and it made me a bit nervous.

I ended up spending all and any free time living at the Gunks in camp swamp for the next 12 years or so also mixing in climbing in the Adirondacks, Little Falls, Bellefonte, Seneca Rocks, Niagara Glen and an endless list of east coast crags.

One Easter break after about 5 years of trad climbing, I was asked to go to Red River Gorge. OMG! Sport climbing opened a whole new world to me; it was all about pullin’ hard without worrying about placing gear.

Meanwhile, I became an instructor and route setter at Rock Ventures indoor gym for over 5 years, which resulted in getting even stronger.

In the late nineties, I met my wife on a climbing trip in Spain. The 8 years following, I spent my summers and some of my winters climbing all over Spain.

I am 45 currently going through my second mid-life crisis - CLIMBING!!!; about 5 years ago I went through my first crisis. Backing up a little more, I started climbing in '89 and climbed until my mid-thirties. I had children and stopped climbing - No Regrets! I became way out of shape, 60 pounds over my climbing weight. One day I freaked out and started running and that year signed up for the Leadville 100 Run. Finished a number of other mountain races and then one day my daughter asked if we could go climbing. It was awesome, climbing with my kids! I could not believe how much I missed climbing . . . I stopped running that day - literally. After 7+ years break without climbing, I was back. And that was 7 months ago.
